| HOW I STARTED CODE ZERO
While working with the Justice Institute of BC, my 40+ year background in Motorsports and Driver-Training allowed me to see the similarities in the principles involved in the training of new Police Officers and Race Car Drivers. Proper uses of vision, steering and braking were key components in the performance and safety of both groups. Moreover, when responding to an emergency as a Police Officer, with such a ‘mixed bag’ of other drivers sharing the road, it is critically important to be the BEST driver you can possibly be. The CODE ZERO program was created in order to teach the public potentially life-saving skills and to demonstrate their value by allowing them to experience the stresses and distractions of Emergency-Response. WHAT ARE COMMON DRIVING MISTAKES PEOPLE NEED TO WORK ON? A prominent one is the ‘improper’ or ‘lack of use’ of signals. Communication between drivers (knowing what we all are doing!) plays an essential role in driver-safety. Turn signals (and of course, brake lights) allow us to communicate from within a vehicle. Hundreds of lives could be saved if we used them to help others prepare themselves for our actions behind-the-wheel. Sudden turns or stops often create panic for other drivers… sometimes with disastrous consequences! |
